Mystic Pizza

As their slogan aptly puts it, this place sells "the pizza that made the movie famous." I always take out-of-town guests here to see the sights on Mystic's Main St. (the drawbridge, the quaint shops, the boats, the river, the colonial houses) and end with a lunch at the Mystic Pizza. They actually filmed the famous Julia Roberts movie here. After eating here, you'll agree with the food critic in the movie. The pizza's that good!

They have a "Greek-style" crust that's not too thick nor too thin. The toppings are generous—my favorites are the sausage and meatloaf (look like slices from a link/loaf) rather than ground up pieces. And, the sauce, there's something in it! They also load on the cheese! My 7-year-old daughter, a finicky eater, enjoys the cheese pizza.

My favorite appetizer is the fried calamari—hot, crunchy, and generous. Haven't tried anything else on the menu.

The prices are good here for what you get. The atmosphere is casual and fun. They usually are busiest in the summer when tourists arrive, but the waiting is not too bad.

I would go down the street for dessert. (Drawbridge Ice Cream Shop—they have fudge in the winter!)

Mystic Pizza, made popular by the 80's movie of the same name fearturing a then unknown Julia Roberts, is a definite stop when in the area. The walls are adorned with photos and posters from the filming of the movie, which is good because you will find yourself looking at them during your (sometimes) hour wait for a table. Unfortunatly they do not take reservations, so try not to come during the lunch and dinner rush or go late at night.

The menu features plenty of pizza choices, subs, Italian dinners and seafood. My personal favorite is the meatball and onion pizza. A medium thick crust topped with melted cheese, sliced meatballs and lots of thinly cut onions.

The prices are on average for a pizza place, and can be a good deal for a family depending on what you order.
