After being told to wait in a half empty restaurant because we didn't have a reservation, we ordered a rather expensive rijsttafel. The soft circus music playing the background became more noticeable and our miserable waitress delivered cold soup. After a few spoons I decided this evening should come to an early end, so I pleaded with the manager (twice) to let me pay for the drinks and soup and skip the rest of the menu. I should be so lucky! We were forced to sit through the entire course of canned food and clammy chicken. The best part of our evening was seeing the exit sign on our way out. My 82 euros will not be forgotten!

Rijsttafel, or Indonesian Rice Table, is one of the most popular dining experiences in Amsterdam. On my last solo trip, I decided that I had to be brave and try it. Even though I was alone, my curiosity got the best of me. A wonderful waiter helped me through the menu and I chose what appeared to be pretty much a basic rice table menu. What appeared in front of me were SEVENTEEN little bowls of wonderful flavors! Most had just a few bites of some unique menu item. It was truly a taster's delight!

If you go to an Indonesian restaurant, the best way to experience the food is to order the Rijsttafel (rice table). This way, you can sample many different dishes without having to make too many choices. Standard rijsttafels have at least a dozen different dishes, and often you can get double that (but you'll want a large group!).
We had the rijsttafel at Sarang Mas, and it was quite good. My favourite dish was the pork satays in peanut sauce. Food ranges from mild to very spicy, and may use various meats (pork, chicken or beef). Some vegetarian dishes are available. Just make sure, whatever you eat, you wash it down with a Heineken...it's the same price for beer or soda.
