Do you want cheap eats that still enable you to call it good quality food? Try The Penguin, a delightful burger joint in Charlotte.

The waitstaff is covered in tattoos and piercings, but business is brisk and caters to not just fellow tattoo enthusiasts but also bankers on a break and families complete with toddlers.

We got there at noon and the place was packed - we ended up waiting about 15 minutes for a table. But it was worth the wait. The three people in our party each got a burger - I got the single, my friend got the double and my husband went for the triple burger. We split an order of onion rings and briefly contemplated getting some fried pickles because they had been recommended to us.

I lived in Charlotte back in the late 80s/early 90s and if I had known about this place I would have been there every night. The prices are perfect, the food is fabulous, the waitstaff is efficient yet friendly, and the atmosphere is fun.
