Café a Brasileira is Lisbon’s answer to the storied Deux Magots Café in Paris and a famous hangout of writers and intellectuals of the past. Festooned in gilded mirrors and an ornate ceiling and lit with chandeliers, the 1920s art deco café was packed with people having everything from espresso to rum and coke.
Like places in other cities that rise to international fame, the Brasileira is a great place to meet other travelers because it’s a bit of a tourist stop. Nonetheless, it retains its authenticity and oozes charm throughout – right down to the hole-in-the-wall magazine and cigarette seller near the entrance working through a Dutch door and the umbrella-shaded tables out front.
Directions: From Baixa-Chiado metro station, follow exit towards Rua Garrett. Cafe will be behind you as you come out of the stairwell exit from the metro.
