Avoid like the Plague!!

When you mention Berlin, I can't help thinking about a visit myself, my wife Kathleen and our two friends Gerry and Viv made in October '07, in particular when we ate in the Badaro Steakhaus on Friedrichstrasse. We were nearly at the end of our meal when Viv realized that her bag had been stolen. The owners of the restaurant were, to say the least, distant and indifferent to our plight. Anyway, the copshop was just across the road and as our wives were not finished, Gerry and myself went to report the theft. With all forms completed we returned to find our wives being held captive as the owners were saying that we hadn’t paid our bill. Thankfully we had paid it by Credit Card earlier, so we produced the receipt and they retired behind the counter with not even an apology. Obviously they had been left with an unpaid bill and were trying to offload it on to anyone – even ignoring our plight regarding the stolen bag. Cold and calculating is how I would describe them – unlike the vast majority of Berliners. As you can guess we will be recommending that people avoid the Badaro like the plague, and thankfully the incident didn’t spoil our stay as we would certainly recommend Berlin as a great holiday destination.

It was so cold the one day we were in Berlin, so we were just happy to see a place where we could go inside and stay warm for a few minutes. But Badaro turned out to be a satisfactory choice.

It was quiet at noon, so we had prompt and friendly service. The menu was long and in German, which I do not mind but it caused my brother, who was with me on his first trip to Europe, some hesitations. The pizza starts at 3 euro and it was quite good— some of the better restaurant pizza I have had. (In competition with Pizza Hut, which is and always has been my gold standard for pizza.)

Our friend Joel had the currywurst, which he seemed to enjoy.

The menu also includes paella and some Mexican dishes, as well as appetizers such as snails. We asked for water and were served big glasses of it.

Unfortunately, it was not so warm in there after all. I had to keep my coat on and was still cold after about 10 minutes.

It is nothing special, but if you are hungry and in the area, there is no reason not to go to Badaro.
