Now, what kind of outing would it be without ice cream? Catalina does not miss the mark in this category, thankfully, due to Big Olaf’s Ice Cream. After traveling to Catalina a few times, I consider visiting Big Olaf’s a bit of a tradition. Although, I do admit that the last time we went to Catalina, I skipped the decadence of a waffle cone sundae in order to fit into a new pair of pants.

But back to the sundaes. Large waffle cones loaded with all of the trimmings will stop any person dead in their tracks. Freshly made waffles and their resulting scents will entice you to stop in and try one of their desserts. If for some reason a line does not extend from the store, enter the shop on the right side of the building and work your way up to the register. The exit is on the left side.

Choose your ice cream, which the staff will hand scoop for you, packing it into the fresh cone. Top it off with mounds of whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry. Caution, eat with a spoon because to do so without utensils is to invite chaos.

Pricewise, I spent less than $5 on my waffle sundae. Should you choose to have something a bit less indulgent, try a single scoop regular cone. The only thing I would criticize about Big Olaf’s is the surly service. The last time I visited, the staff brusquely herded us through the line to get us in and out as quickly as possible. While I understand the value of high throughput, it wouldn’t kill the staff to smile once in a while.

At any rate, sit back with your ice cream and watch the interesting people pass you by. While people watching always entertains me, doing so with a sundae in hand makes it a welcome pastime.
