I Won't Be Back! Food Made Me Ill

I love to get off the beaten tourist track and go find places to eat where the food, service, price is local and the food quality top notch. This restaurant seriously lacks service and quality, to be honest I don't expect to be treated like royalty, but when waiters are rolling their eyes at you when ordering food it's not a good start. The restaurant is in a nice setting away from the crowds, and is a family home cooking establishment, when I first seen it I thought this is going to be great, I was wrong. I had antipasti to start which was ok, but I know it was from a jar, followed by gnocchi alle vongole which was terrible, chewy doughy sticky gnocchi with clams not attached to their shell (always be wary) some of which where too hot to eat while others where stone cold (again not good), this was followed by local fried fish which where tiny fried fish nothing special (again the freshness was in doubt).

There was a mix of locals and some tourists, with tourists not getting the same level of food or service as the locals. I ordered a bottle of white wine from the menu, there was only 2, what I got was chilled red house wine in a jug, when I queried I was told this was all that was left, but locals who arrived after got the same wine that was apparently gone.

Don't expect coffee here as they have none, or so I was told.

To top it off I was ill after it!! Don't go, you'll be disappointed if you like food.

Trattoria Da Emilia

Having read about this place in the guidebook, we went off to look for it. On our way, we were clearly looking a bit lost, and an ex-pat offered to help us on our way. We asked her where she'd recommend to eat, and it was the same place, which seemed like a good sign. She walked us down to the Marina Grande, and there, on a platform just over the water's edge, was the restaurant.

The restaurant itself is one of several little trattoria on the Marina Grande, where the fishing boats bring in the daily catch. One way of guaranteeing your fish is fresh! It is sat back from the road with indoor and outdoor seating over there. Across the road is the beach/port and the terraced eating area. We were lucky enough to get a seat right at the edge, which gave us great views and plenty for the kids to watch.

It was the most fantastic place to have lunch - we sat there, with the sound of the water lapping underneath, shaded from the sun shining down, stunning views of all the colourful beach huts and boats, and over it all in the distance—Vesuvius.

So, we were off to a good start already...and the food was pretty good, too! We shared two mixed antipasto with the usual cold beers and local white wine. Main courses included a grilled fish, gnocchi ai vongole, ravioli, plain pasta, and grilled cuttle fish. The side tomato salad we ordered was particularly good. For dessert we shared two mixed fruit and one melon. The coffee machine was out of order, so we had iced coffees instead, which was novel. The bill came to 120,50E.

To add to the ambiance of the place, there were a couple of gorgeous local cats around who came from scraps and attention, and when they tired of us, the kids fed the fish in the water below us bits of bread, which was a huge success. Every little bit of bread was mobbed by fish, much more fun than feeding ducks!

It was good, simple local cuisine served by friendly people in a fabulous setting. Of all the lunches we had during our trip, this is the one that sticks in the mind the most, definitely the most memorable. Just perfect.
