We couldn’t find that many good places to eat in the centre of Angers. There seem to be a lot of cheap cafes which are perfectly good but not many places to sit and relax and enjoy a good meal. We were lucky that on our first night when we didn’t check into our hotel till 8.30pm that we strolled round the corner and straight into the Brasserie du Theatre. A largish busy restaurant with lots of seats outside as well as in. We took a table right on the pavement and got a good view of the police ticketing cars parked illegally in the busy Place du Ralliement.
The waiters are chatty and efficient and used to dealing with tourists with basic French. The menu is pretty big and seems to specialise in dishes from Alsace. I had the Choucroute Brasserie which was enormous and included bratwurst, black pudding a bacon chop, sauerkraut and boiled potato. My wife had an entrecote steak which she asked for and, surprisingly for France got, well done. If anything a bit too well done. A nice bottle of local Anjou red went down very well. Ice cream, coffee and some local cognac finished things off very well. A minor oddity when we asked for Badoit sparkling water and were offered San Pellegrino instead. This happened in a number of restaurants. French restaurants are usually proud to serve local produce so why did we get Italian water instead of French? A bit of a mystery.
The bill was 62 euros which I thought was pretty fair.
