Claim Jumper

The Claim Jumper is a large chain of family restaurants with a old western saloon. They specialize in family dining with large entrées. We visited the Torrance location on a Friday evening for dinner.

Claim Jumper is always popular, regardless of location, so we ended up waiting for about 45 minutes for a table. When we were finally seated, our server greeted up promptly and took our drink orders. The Claim Jumper is decorated similar to an old western saloon circa 1850. There's a self-serve salad bar in the middle of the restaurant, should somebody order the salad bar.

My friends decided to order the Oaxacan Sea Bass, the Rotisserie Chicken, which came with a choice of 2 sides, she chose the honey bran muffin and veggies, she also added a mini wedge salad. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak. My friends wedge salad and honey bran muffin came quickly. The muffin was baked in a mini-bundt tin rather than a conventional muffin tin. I tried some of the muffin, I'm not a fan of honey bran, but it had good texture and taste.

Our entrées came shortly thereafter. They were all fairly large, but my Chicken Fried Steak was huge! The Claim Jumper is known for its large portions. My friend said her Rotisserie Chicken was quite good, and not dry at all. She even ate some of the skin, as it had all the tasty herbs and spices rubbed over it. My other friend liked his Oaxacan Sea Bass. The Sea Bass is not from Oaxaca, but it's New Zealand Sea Bass cut thick and sauté, braised in a spicy traditional Oaxacan tomato herb broth and served over steamed rice. He said it was tasty, but the fish itself was a bit dry. He really liked eating the rice with the sauce though.

I loved my Chicken Fried Steak. There were two filets of breaded cube steak with mashed red potatoes and sauce with a biscuit. This entrée definitely isn't for dieters! The rich sauce and tasty steak made a good combination. We were too stuffed and had to take doggie bags home. Our server came by to see if we wanted dessert. Unfortunately we were too stuffed. The Claim Jumper specializes is very large desserts. The most famous dessert being it's Chocolate Motherlode Cake. It's a huge and very dense six layer chocolate cake with chocolate fudge and walnuts. Another example of unusually large desserts are the I'Declair. It's a cream filled eclair the size of a football.

Our total came out to $66, with 2 drinks, 3 entrées, and tax. I really like the Claim Jumper, we've been to other locations and the food is generally consistently good. It's a fun atmosphere and family friendly.
