Bahama Breeze

Bahama Breeze

Behind this restaurant review lies a story of two girls who met in Hong Kong at age six, became best friends through fourth grade, and got separated when one moved to Iowa, while the other stayed behind. Fast forward almost thirty years later and you would see my best friend, Kristin, and me laughing over drinks and good food.

Kristin now lives in Tacoma but made the drive up to Tukwila with her husband to meet me for dinner at Bahama Breeze. She suggested it because of its fun atmosphere. I wasn’t so impressed with the atmosphere as I was the food. Bahama Breeze touts itself as a place to “feed your island spirit.” And that I did.

We started with the Coconut Shrimp appetizer, along with the West Indies Patties, upon the suggestion of our server. While the shrimp tasted good enough, the patties left me hankering for more. I like Caribbean flavors and these patties, pastries filled with seasoned beef and spices, captured what I remembered of our visits to Jamaica and the Bahamas.

We also ordered Lemon Breeze drinks, which really were just lemonades. The difference was that these drinks were sweetened with sugar cane juice. In all honesty, I would have done just fine had I asked for water instead. The drinks were good but Hot Dog On A Stick lemonade is more of a treat for me.

For my entrée, I ordered the Calypso Shrimp Linguine. Note, you can choose a lighter portion in a 10” diameter plate versus the regular portion at 14” in diameter. I mistakenly chose the regular portion and had to leave my leftovers behind since I was traveling. The Creole cream sauce that covers the linguine, dozens of shrimp, garlic, and diced tomatoes tasted wonderfully.

Our server tempted us with dessert and the three of us finally conceded to ordering a slice of Rebecca’s Key Lime Pie. Good thing we decided to share because the pie slice is one sixth of the pie, at about 2.5 inches high. I couldn’t get enough of the graham cracker crust and at 2.5 inches high, there was plenty.

Pricewise, here’s the skinny: Lemon Breeze $1.99, Coconut Shrimp $8.50, West Indies Patties $6.75 (get this if you’re getting only one appetizer), Calypso Shrimp Linguine $15.99 (or $11.99 for a lighter portion, which I recommend), Key Lime Pie $5.25.

When there’s good company, you almost don’t notice the food. However in this case, not only was the company fantastic, the food became a problem because it was so good, we stopped talking and focused on what we ate, wasting valuable catching-up-time. Ah well, if that’s the worst complaint I can muster, it can’t be all bad.
