Description: We all dream of an intimate upscale bistro or restaurant where they know us by name, and treat us like a celebrity when we walk in the door: they know our favorite table, they know our preferences on wines and foods, and they even know our favorite server.
Copperblue (copperbluechicago.com) is this kind of place, and I could easily see myself succumbing to the discreet pampering of this charming Streeterville restaurant.
The restaurant does not have a flashy entrance - just a lovely brushed metallic sign and a couple of valet parkers mark the door - and it's located on the Illinois side of Lake Point Tower just before Navy Pier, so at first I thought it was some place private, related to the LPT. However, I found their menus via OpenTable.com and thought things looked delicious, so one evening I treated myself to dinner there before heading over to Navy Pier for a show at the Shakespeare Theatre.
Copperblue is an intimate space, with perhaps fifteen tables total, set is a warmly designed space that brings up thoughts of Tuscan sunlight and the Mediterranean. Excellent jazz music - played at a volume that gives atmosphere while allowing you to talk - rounded out the lovely atmosphere. The staff is wonderful, attentive without being intrusive or hovering. The seating is very comfortable and invites you to linger.
It should be noted that Copperblue uses local organic farmers for a lot of their products. Their menu also appears to change based on produce availability. Their wine menu, in keeping with the contemporary French/Mediterranean cuisine, is strictly French, Spanish and Italian wines; and very well-matched to the food.
I started with their appetizer of grilled prawns with blue crab salad and a lemon-celery seed vinaigrette. All their food was beautifully presented, works of art, and tasted just as wonderful as it looked. For my main dish, I had a delectable pork loin. And for dessert, I lingered over their unusual and sinfully yummy berry tiramisu.
Most importantly, as a solo diner, I felt not only welcomed, but warmly welcomed. Copperblue wants to make every diner feel special, whether they're eating solo or whether they're celebrating with a whole group of friends. It's a nice, private spot for a romantic dinner, too. I look forward to dining here again!
