MR Onions

We were fortunate enough to get vouchers from Norwegian for a variety of restaurants in ports of call (part of Norwegian's freestyle dining program and a definite perk!). For $5, we were able to get up to $25 of food, including gratuities.

We initially went into a restaurant called the Hog Penny in Hamilton, but decided to skip it given the half-hour wait and the dark interior.

MR Onions was way up Par-la-Ville Road, away from Front Street. And since it was away from the main tourist drag, it was basically empty, and we were able to get seated right away. The hostess was warm and we were pleasantly surprised by the comfortable atmosphere. The menu had a bit of everything from salads to sandwiches to pastas--there was so much to choose from! There was also a sports bar, and I read later on that the restaurant has Internet access.

Before we ordered, we were given a loaf of fresh baked bread, which I thought was a nice touch. Since Bermuda is so famous for its onions, the bread had a bit of an oniony taste. In any case, it was warm and delicious.

For lunch, I started with a house salad, which was enormous. My husband started with a fish chowder and said it was delicious. The waiter recommended the fish dishes, so my husband ordered the cajun tuna salad and I ordered the fishwich, a blackened mahimahi sandwich.

The fishwich had to be the best thing on the menu. The piece of fish was enormous and was placed on delicious wheat bread. The sandwich also came with coleslaw and french fries. Although my husband said his salad was good, he was upset he didn't get the fishwich as well as it was easily the best fish either one of us had ever tasted.

Like any restaurant in Bermuda, MR Onions was expensive by American standards--my sandwich was close to $16 and the salad was $6-$7. Our diet cokes were also pricey at around $3 each. Fortunately, the vouchers from Norwegian covered our bill save $2, and we had to pay the $6 for the drinks. All in all, a wonderful experience and very good value for the money.

Since MR Onions is a large, spacious restaurant with plenty of seating, it was fine for children and large families.
