Pete's Place

Hidden away on the corner of the main square in Sorata is the business of an Englishman abroad.

Pete, an English teacher from London, came to Bolivia 4 years ago and set up his restaurent. Clearly all his learning was employed when choosing the name.

The food is primarily vegetarian, although there are some meat dishes. Particularly good value is the 17 Boliviano (US$2) set meal, which is always vegetarian.

It´s been tough times in Sorata with political disturbances and blockades keeping the tourists away. Pete claims he has only been able to open for 9 of the last 24 months.

This has allowed him time to write his book on Bolivian history. If there´s anything you want to know, just ask.

He´s got plenty of time. The place, like the rest of Sorata is rarely busy, with no more than 10 customers per evening.

But I found it a great place to relax. There are weekly proper newspapers from the UK, there are proper big pots of proper English tea.

It´s not done in an exceedingly touristy way, it´s just a restaurent in Bolivia owned by an Englishman. But it´s an endangered species. Take a few days to relax in Sorata and save Pete´s Place.
