Kolorowa Restaurant

There are lots of dining choices in this small village but we chose this one because of its splendid position on Krupowki St and for its appealing façade, a beautiful rugged timber structure so typical of the Zakopane highland style, also its picture windows opened up vistas to the street so people watching and snowy nights could be enjoyed beside its open fireplace.

On the right as you enter the restaurant you will pass a huge and immaculate open kitchen and of course it was a beehive of activity. Waitresses dressed in highly embroidered skirts and dresses added greatly to the ambience as did the excellent Gorale band that played for long segments and oh what beautiful music the trio produced.

The interior of the place was set up with a variety of sturdy wooden tables that seated anywhere from two to twenty, overhead flowers and herbs were drying along its beams and the smell of the wood smoke intermingled with the delicious smells emanating from its kitchen.

Because we had been very active and had just returned from Mt Grubowka we started with a delicious mulled wine it was just the thing for taking off the chill. After looking through the menu some of its offerings would leave you having to be rolled back to your hotel. Thick pork cutlets steaks and bigos {a hearty highland stew}, and on a lighter note, fish dishes- mainly trout.

To say the portions were generous is an understatement

We ordered a starter of Grilled smoked cheese {cheese has been produced in this region since the fifteenth century} with mushrooms and they served it with crusty bread, we also ordered the beetroot soup a specialty here, we ate so much that neither of us finished our salad and main dish of pierogis. Usually pierogi is the size of a pig’s ear, but here, they were the size of a very large muffin they were delicious, stuffed with cheese, cabbage, and fragrant mountain herbs but the portion was enough to feed three. We ate here two nights and enjoyed the food and ambience. They do not offer desserts but believe me you won’t have room. {Next door was a cake shop/café for those who like to eat dessert.} The cake shop and this restaurant is open nightly until 10pm. Including drinks that meal came to just under $30 Canadian dollars.
