In 1869, miners from Durham's plentiful coal fields gathered at the Market Tavern to form the first coal miner's union in the history of the city. It's easy to see why: the Market Tavern combines a homey atmosphere, good food, and excellent beer in a wonderful blend of all the things that make pubs great. And the Market Tavern's central location makes it really hard to miss.
The fried fish appetizer with curry mayo is a definite go; beyond that, you can't go wrong with the Market Tavern's classic pub food. The steak and ale pie (a rotating special) is especially good. As for beer, stick to the real ales—cask-conditioned, hand-pulled—of which they've usually got four or five on tap. Of course, all the usual suspects can be found here, as well: Carling, Strongbow, Stella, Guinness, and the like, should any of those strike your fancy.Tip: At the Market Tavern, as at most pubs, you order your food at the bar—even though here you'll have menus at your table. Also: There's a no-smoking dining area at the back of the pub.
