Description: A hidden gem of a an upmarket restaurant, it's tucked away in the old fort that is reached by a short stroll through the old town, past the entrance to the Porto Santa Maria Hotel and beyond the restaurants in the small square. Walk into the courtyard of the fort that houses a modern-art gallery, and even then the restaurant isn’t obvious. It occupies the ground floor of the main building to the right, with an inner dining room, an outer conservatory-style area, and a terrace overlooking the sea, of which only the tables next to the castellated gaps in the old wall have a view.
By Funchal standards, it's quite formal dining. Dress up in the evenings, but you can go casual at lunchtime. There are tables with crisp white tablecloths and napkins. They have good food that is served well. The lunchtime menu is short, with just three or four starters and main courses. Fresh pasta made a welcome change from the more standard offerings of many of Funchal’s restaurants. It was 22.50€ for three courses for me and two for my companion, with drinks, so it was a very good value.
