Restaurant Landgasthof Brandstetterhof
The Michelin Red Guide recommended the Landgasthof Brandstetterhof as a "Bib Hotel", i.e. a hotel where a couple can stay comfortably and enjoy breakfast at less than €90 per night. Being Michelin, it goes without saying that the restaurant attached to such establishment should also be a touch above the rest. The restaurant in the Landgasthof Brandstetterhof surpassed our expectations in every respect: excellent food, excellent wine, very good service, child friendly environment and personnel, and above all incredible value for money. When ordering non-sparkling water with our first meal, the server even recommended the excellent local tap water rather than charging a huge mark up on a branded name. Tried as we might on two occasions, we failed to exceed €50 including tip for three diners and ample drinks.
Having spent several hours driving the previous couple of days, we were tired and decided to dine early our first night in Stans. With only a few stairs between the restaurant and the bedroom, we were ready to treat ourselves. We started with a large, excellent sherry (€2.20) and a martini bianco (€2.60). The main courses, cordon bleu (€13), spinach dumplings (€5), and a Wienerschnitzel (€12) were accompanied by huge, fresh salads and French fries. The restaurant claims that it takes time to select wine that suits the food perfectly and we thus simply ordered two glasses of dry white house wine. From experience, I know that no good restaurant will try to fob its customers off with a bad house wine and what we received was excellent. Even more stunning was the price of €2.80 per glass, which seemed significantly larger than the 1/8 liter the bill claimed. We finished the meal off with two strong coffees (€2 each). Throughout the meal, service was attentive without being irritating.
For our last dinner in Austria, the Brandstetterhof was again our choice. We ordered a large bottle of sparkling water, which at €3.50 is hardly a markup on supermarket prices. We again order two glasses of house wine, which were once again superb value at €2.80. The cream of asparagus soup (€3.30) was almost a meal on its own and the huge fresh salad with chicken strips (€7.20) could feed more than one. In comparison, my duck breast at €14 seemed extravagant but then again quality has a price. It was cooked to perfection – none of the duck sashimi or tough, dried out meat that lesser cooks dish out. We were in the mood for ice cream so I ordered a Coup Dänemark (three huge scoops with cream) (€4.10) and the three-year old received a Donald Duck Cup (€2.60), while my wife ordered a crepe (€3).
Both dinner and all three breakfasts we enjoyed in Brandstetterhof were superb with excellently prepared food using obviously fresh and high quality ingredients.
