Another Fine Dining Experience at Shackleford's

This has become a familiar and regular dining spot whenever I come to Williamsburg. Their menu and quality are outstanding; you can count on a great meal here!

While my sister Cindy and my niece Brooke had both lived in Williamsburg, I don't think either had been here for dinner although both knew of the place.

We arrived shortly after 5:00pm on Friday evening, and other that a few folks out on the patio enjoying an adult beverage and a strumming guitar entertainer, it was pretty quiet. By the time we were done with our meal, however, business had picked up. I believe that their customer base is largely locals and not much in the way of tourists given they are about ten minutes from Colonial Williamsburg area where most congregate and visit.

Cindy and Brooke order the crab cake appetizer at my suggestion. I cannot come here without ordering the crab cake entree for dinner, which is served with a pan fried three cheese polenta. Ordinarily I would sub out the polenta for a potato side but I thoroughly enjoyed the sweet cornbread side dish and was happy that I had it on this visit.

Cindy and Brooke both ordered salads, which were bountiful and included grilled chicken, strawberries, and a colorful assortment of greens and veggies. The warm loaves of bread came early and were good with the salads and my crab cakes.

For toddler Noah, it was a PB&J sandwich along with a side dish of applesauce. He loved the applesauce so much that he had a refill of the yummy goodness. (Take a look at his photo that is included with this review.)

They had a nice dessert menu but we decided that we would share one. Three women . . . choice to be made? CHOCOLATE! We enjoyed the nice sized wedge of chocolate cake.

Dinner for the three of us, plus the kid's meal sandwich was $80 including tip. As usual, I scored a Restaurant.com gift certificate for $25 off for the purchase price of just $2. Our dining experience was outstanding and I will continue to recommend Shackleford's to anyone traveling or living in Williamsburg.

Shackleford's II

What would we do without Restaurant.com? Yet another wonderful “find” that is off the beaten path in an area of Williamsburg most often frequently by locals and rather few tourists. At the end of large shopping plaza, Shackleford’s II, you may not even see this place from the main road! But do not let its out of the way location deter you from venturing into the outskirts of town to this wonderfully delightful restaurant! They are known for their outstanding selection from land and sea, including a raw bar.

We were greeted by a lovely hostess who immediately took us to a nice booth where the sturdy wooden decor was very warm and homey. Our server almost immediately welcomed us and took our beverage orders. After a few minutes with the menus, he was back asking for our dinner choices. Any time I have the opportunity to have real crab cakes, I just at it...and David went with the beef tips over rice. I also opted to add an a la carte dinner salad, which was very good.

At the time that my salad was brought out, we were provided a plate with piping hot from the oven French loaf bread. Shortly thereafter, dinner arrived. In addition to our entrées, our meal was accompanied by steamed broccoli and cauliflower which was fresh and crisp...cooked perfectly. I was very impressed with the crab cakes, as they were 95% pure lump crab with very little in the way of filler; probably just enough, to hold them together. While I thought David’s meal looked a bit skimpy, he was full by the time he completed all that was on his plate. The beef tips were cooked in a sweet teriyaki sauce with red peppers and had outstanding flavor. He especially enjoyed the wild rice that accompanied his meal. Unfortunately, we did not save room for dessert, not that either of us really needs the extra calories. I will say that they had a very interesting menu of chef prepared delights including a “cheesecake of the day” and a homemade gingerbread cake served ala mode.

Dinner was a bit on the pricey side at $18 per entrée with another few bucks for the dinner salad. We felt, however, that the price paid was well worth it as the quality and service were outstanding. We would recommend Shackleford’s II without hesitation and will hopefully return again ourselves!

Shacklefords

Near Busch Gardens, so it's good after a day at the park, when everyone's tired and bit haggard-looking. Sports bar motif, but the food is better than the average appetizer-laden menu at most of these types of restaurants.

Did you ever go to a restaurant and instantly feel at home? Well, if you haven't, visit Shacklefords and you will know what I am talking about. The staff is very friendly, from the time you walk in the door, through your dinner, and even at the bar. They just seem to go out of their way to make sure you have a good time. There is outdoor seating available, weather permitting. Their menu is varied and provides something for everybody. The average dinners run between $10 and $20 and offer a delicious range of choices...how does baked shrimp, scallops, and lump crabmeat mixed with artichokes and parmesan cheese sound? The Au Gratin is served with saffron rice pilaf and with the vegetable of the day...all for just $10.95. Something else? How about a marinated grilled pork tenderloin, sliced and topped with a sweet and southern peach, pear, and raisin chutney. The pork is accompanied by caramelized sweet mashed potatoes and the vegetable of the day, all for just $10.95! Prefer a sandwich? I love the London broil sandwich. It is delicious beef which is rosemary marinated and served with a sun-dried tomato, horseradish, and cream cheese spread. Price? Just $7.50! They have superb soups and salads and the desserts...well, just say that they are just as lovely to look at as they are to eat! This little jewel is not right in the heart of Colonial Williamsburg, but located in the newest shopping center in the area. It's easily reached and well worth the short drive!
