Pierce's Pitt Bar-B-Que

I had heard this was a local legend. I had even read that folks park on the shoulder of the Interstate and climb a fence to get here. We found an easy route aided by official looking green highway signs. From I-64 exit 238, go south to the stoplight, and turn right onto Rochambeau. Or from Hwy 60 go north on Airport Road to Rochambeau and turn left. But enough about getting there, you could just open your car window and follow that wonderful Bar-B-Que scent.

We weren’t sure where to park or what door to enter, but once inside we knew we were going to have to wait in line to order. Don’t be intimidated. I asked a local for instructions on the procedure here and he was very cordial. Pierce’s crew is experienced at moving people on through the line. When you get to the counter to place your order be prepared, because it goes fast. We both ordered the popular BBQ pulled pork sandwiches with coleslaw. Bill’s was a J.C.’s special and included a Jumbo sandwich, Regular Drink, French Fries and a HomeBaked Cookie. His cookie choices were chocolate chip, oatmeal raisin, or macadamia nut. Tough decision, especially since he was eyeing the tempting dessert menu. Also on the menu are BBQ chicken, burgers, BBQ salads, BBQ ribs and lots of Southern side dishes like Sweet Potato Sticks, Hush Puppies, and Collards. If someone in your party doesn’t like BBQ there are choices like Chicken Tenders, and Hot Dogs. Prices are moderate and you can get take out, too.

The difficult part of eating at Pierce’s is finding a table. Its first come first serve. No table…you take the stuff to your car. Generally people are polite about not lingering after their meals. However, the tabletops and floor aren’t wiped clean very often. The floor around the drink station was sticky enough to pull your shoes off. Supper for two with one beverage was $11.89.

Please don't ask me where Pierce's is, I wouldn't remember. It took us three tries to find it. I can tell you that when you get there, you'll be glad you did, because the BBQ is the fall of the bone, sweet, juicy kind that you can't beat. We went there twice. Once we had lunch and the second time we had take out when relatives came over. It's fast food but very good food. It's busy, but the staff makes sure the tables are cleaned as soon as people finish. They have a soda station where you can serve yourself soft drinks.

What this place lacks in ambience, it makes up in taste and service. The pulled pork sandwiches were great with a not too sweet, slight vinegar taste. They had ribs, chicken, etc. Although my wife and I are the health conscious types (we exercise and try to eat well), we threw caution to the wind and pigged out (pun intended)! Pierce's reminds of a knock 'em dead comedian: I can't remember anything, but that I really enjoyed myself and would love to do it again. That day when you want to eat in and relax, make sure you get Pierce's on the way home. Enjoy!

A trip to Pierce’s is mandatory for all barbecue lovers who come to Williamsburg. Be prepared for a big crown and long lines – virtually an institution among locals. Pulled Pork, Onion Rings, etc. Open Daily

Pierce's is our must-stop on the way to the Outer Banks. Pierce's BBQ is just north of Williamsburg along the interstate. Follow the bright yellow signs; there are some twists and turns, but you will get there. When you do, make sure you are hungry. The burgers are good but the BBQ is awesome. Also, the burgers take longer to cook, so place your burger order separate from the BBQ stuff.

Decisions, decisions! Get ribs (half or full rack, dinner platter or not), catfish, or BBQ (jumbo, regular, or super). One combo (1/2 lb BBQ and chicken breast) does not help. A good bet is to be with someone that will split meals; say, one get ribs and one get catfish (mix and match to create your own combo).

Opt for the dinner platter when possible. For an extra buck you get fries, slaw, and the omnipresent hush puppies. Drinks are self-serve, so you might as well get the smallest size. The cookies are often good.

Texas style Bar-B-Que in Virginia! For BBQ fans, this is the real thing. Lots of chunky meat and sauce on top! Its a roadside restaurant, so don't worry about going in cut-offs and flip-flops.
