Heartland Brewery

I went there for a late lunch after a job interview on a Thursday afternoon. Walking in, the place was nearly empty. I decided to sit at the bar. There were four to five patrons, all eating or drinking one of the pubs house brews.

The young bartender - relatively attractive and dressed in all black - greeted me and asked if I would like a drink. After much consideration of their beer menu I ordered the Seasonal Sampler. It comes with five ounce samples of the bar's five house brews and three additional beers, which change every couple of months. This costs $12.95.

Waiting for my food and enjoying the tasty beverages, I noticed the surroundings were very relaxing. The place was relatively quiet expect for the whisper of patrons carrying on conversations. They were businessmen in khakis and blue button-down shirts on a break from lunch. Next to me sat a woman in a black suit. She ordered chips and some sort of fruity drink and then continued to click away at her Blackberry. And the whole time the television was set on the YES network so I could watch the Yankees play. I was really enjoying the atmosphere. The booths on the other side of the restaurant were mostly dark and empty while the bar was bright.
For lunch I ordered two appetizers - buffalo chicken spring rolls ($8.50) and steamed ginger chicken wontons ($7.50). The buffalo wings were delicious. They came with a buffalo dipping sauce that was spicy but not too hot. They also came with a blue cheese sauce that was not too salty, as in my past experiences. The chicken wontons were good, but not great. They didn't seem to have a taste strong enough to make me order them again. The sauce on top was slightly sweet and tasty, but the dipping sauce left a lot to be desired.

After only five of the beers I was drunk and continued to drink only water. I was overly ambitious and ordered the brownie sundae for dessert. I shouldn't have done this as I was already full. But my greediness got the best of me. The brownie comes warm with chocolate (not vanilla) ice cream, then smothered in chocolate sauce and topped with whipped cream. It was so damned good. But be aware, the brownie had nuts on it. By the time I put the spoon down for the final time, I was so full I felt ill. But everything had been so yummy.
In the end I spent $32 on lunch and left my handsome bartender a hefty $10 tip for being too cute and so attentive.

This is a must-visit for beer lovers!

If you like beer, you can’t miss this one. Heartland Brewery is located at several places in Manhattan. The one we visited is located at 35 Union Square, between 16th and 17th Streets. The Heartland Brewery has a dark-wood interior and mix of high-top tables near the front bar and deep wooden booths toward the back.

Menu items range from expected starters, such as onion rings, mini-burgers, and quesadillas to sandwiches and more adventurous items, such as grilled rib eye.

Let’s talk about the beer. They have a good variety of fresh-brewed beers and a lot of tasty seasonal beers. Our favourite is the Old Red Nose Ale. This is one good seasonal beer (during Christmas/winter). It’s a copper-brown, almost reddish in colour. The flavour is rummy and sweet, tasting of orange and ginger. The body of this beer is full, rich, and spicy. You order this beer in December and January.

Sit, enjoy your beer, and don't worry about how long you're there... it’s perfect!
