Dining A La Cart

Being but a young and poor traveler, adrift on life's road with more hope in my heart than cash in my pocket, my major dining experiences while in Venice involved street food. First off, there's a great farmers market in the mornings, with piles of fish on ice not to mention fresh fruits and vegetables. Definitely worth a visit just to explore, even if not to graze. Another unique thing in Venice is the hand carts, which, along with the usual sodas and ices, often have a small sliver rack topped by a mini fountain, which douses water over fresh chunks of coconut. Grab a limonata to go along and enjoy. (But be wiser than I, and watch out for the the pompelmo juice. It's grapefruit, not orange. Blech, in a word. ) Finally, I will end my mention of Venice street fare with a paean to gelato. In English you'd call it ice cream, but it's lighter and sweeter and so much better, in so many ways. It's all over Venice and I highly recommend it as an accompaniment to any activity.
