The George Inn is tucked away down a little back street off Borough High Street in Southwark. It is apparently London's last Galleried Coaching Inn left and is now protected for all, owned by the National Trust.
Whilst the pub itself is quite small inside, with some small benches and tables in front of the main bars, the best place to sit is outside in the yard in front of this magnificent white rendered building, which even has a slight lean. Whilst the view around the pub is more modern, with a 1970s office block enveloping the rest of the yard, its cobbled appearance, picnic benches, and patio heaters all make the setting and experience worthwhile.
If you see a free bench, grab it BEFORE you go in the pub and get some drinks. People fight over seating space, and wait and see what happens when you go to leave. It will be like seagulls round a discarded bread roll.
The food is modest pub grub, traditional things like sausage and mash, fish-and-chips, and pies. They do have a salad selection, but I think they only serve food until 8pm. Warm and inviting, it's a great place to be. It's in a unique location and building—try it and see.
