Situated in a row of restaurants on the cobble stoned main tourist street through town, Korona seemed a good, but random, choice for an evening meal. The building was a flat orange colour and seemed a popular choice, as most tables inside were taken already. It was a pleasant evening, so we chose to sit outside under the large umbrellas.
Our waiter spoke English very well and communication was not an issue at all. We were provided with some bread as we browsed the menu. I hadn't tried traditional Hungarian stew yet, and we were leaving Hungary the next morning, so that was one requirement for my meal. I randomly selected a main platter from the menu and hoped for the best. Tom wasn't bothered about his meal, so he chose some random items as well.
Our order:
Appetisers: Tom had pancakes stuffed with spiced meat and gravy on top, and I had Hungarian stew (fire included to keep it warm!). Mains dishes: Tom had a sirloin with fried goose liver; a salad of cucumber, tomatoes, and peppers; and mashed potatoes in deep-fried stick form, like a mozzarella cheese stick. I had Budapest-style sirloin (mushrooms, peas, peppers, and tomatoes) with rice, potatoes, and a salad of cucumber, tomatoes, and peppers.
The Hungarian stew tasted very similar to my Mom's beef stew, with a bit of paprika thrown in. I was pleased with my choice and rather enjoyed the presentation. It came in a little stew pot hung over a flame to keep it warm.
Tom's pancakes were the best part of the whole meal! I think I need to learn how to make them. As with most of the meals we had in Hungary, the food was heavy and laden with much sour cream.
The starters were better than the mains. Maybe I just wasn't hungry enough after I had my Hungarian stew? I would have just taken my main as a doggie bag, if it would have been an option.
We stuck to sparkling mineral water instead of alcohol, since we had to drive back to Budapest and knew we were going to have an early start the next day.
The highlight of dinner was the music and dancing going on inside the restaurant. There were folk dancers in costume, a violin player, and singing going on. I couldn't get a good photograph due to all of the movement and the light being low. It was wonderful to sit and listen to the music knowing that it was going on right in the next room and not on some CD.
Korona, I recommend this restaurant for the starters and the entertainment. Choose something besides the sirloins for a main meal, though! Try to get a seat inside to have front-row views of the dancers. We were forced to fight for space at the door to watch the entertainment.
