The lines are long and the sun is hot, but Nathan’s is a must-stop in Coney Island. Nathan’s has been serving hot dogs since 1916 and annually holds the World’s International Hot Dog Eating Contest. (The record is 53 1/2 dogs in 12 minutes.) My favorite is chili cheese with sauerkraut. The cheese fries are amazing and the portions are huge. I can never finish a meal there. Other favorites are onion rings, hot-dog nuggets, hamburgers and french fries. Everything is excellent.
There isn’t much seating, but it’s only a short walk to the beach. I always end up talking to people while waiting in line. Must be the excitement of truly getting one of the tastiest hot dogs in America. And try their lemonade—it’s amazing!
Nathan’s products have soared in popularity, and they’ve expanded, with stores in Israel and Egypt, and are sold in 41 states in the US and 17 foreign countries. And this is the place where it started over 90 years ago.
And here's a tip: there's a second Nathan's if you walk towards the ocean, right on the boardwalk. They have a limited menu, but the wait is usually much shorter.
Open year-round.
