We had to do Harrys after hearing so much about it, yes it's fast food but once in a while, why not? It was late but busy we had a "tiger" pie, mash, peas and gravy. Great atmosphere!

It baffles me that this mediocre establishment is so popular. I really wasn't impressed. I can't see why a little American looking food cart that serves the same sort of rubbish as McDonald's could become so highly regarded. It's funny that, like the giant Coca Cola sign at King's Cross, something so completely American could be considered an 'Australian icon.'My boyfriend ordered the ? This is what it looked like: A soggy, flaky pie base filled with unidentifiable grey mush, topped with synthetic mashed potatoes, which were arranged in such a manner that some disgusting brown gravy could be pooled in the middle. Around this was some sort of green slush which I believe used to be peas. I had a taste. It was as horrible and bland as it looked.

For a quiet bite in one of the best pie shops in New South Wales, Harry's is a must-eat dining experience. Always fresh and perfect.

Harry's Cafe de Wheels

The Pie Floater -- steak pie, mushy peas, and gravy -- is absolutely fantastic. Great location, with seating provided in the form of a large railway sleeper. Cheap food, with a vast range of pies -- simply great pies -- makes this place highly recommended. We were married in the morning, had a Pie Floater for lunch, and then enjoyed a seriously good restaurant meal in the evening.

The typical fast food item in Australia is the meat pie, which looks like your average chicken pot pie in your grocer's freezer. The fillings in (and on top of) the pies can be almost anything. You can get traditional fillings like chicken, lamb or beef, or you can go wild and have salmon, kangaroo, emu or crocodile. There is also a bizarre variation called the "pie floater".

Perhaps the most famous pie stand in Sydney is Harry's Cafe de Wheels, a local wharfside institution which serves a typical pie floater with mashed green peas and a ladling of brown gravy. It is green and lumpy and messy, but surprisingly tasty. I went for lunch and there was an impressive crowd of locals eating meat pies along the waterside. This place was recently seen as a station point in the CBS reality show "The Amazing Race".
