Frost

Frost is the newest (and as far as I know, only) gelato shop in Tucson, and it is amazing. There's tons of authentic Italian flavors like amaretto and lemoncello, along with the usual favorites like chocolate, cheesecake, and strawberry. What is gelato, you might be wondering? It's an ice cream like dessert, but it has less milk fat and no eggs or butter. It has less air than ice cream which results in a much thicker, creamier texture and more flavor.

Frost is great because they have a huge variety of flavors and a fun setting. The place is decorated in cool blue and white tones, and has the feel of an upscale diner. When I visited in November, there was a line out the door. They also have fun extras like a little cookie in each scoop, and affogato - espresso and gelato combined. The gelato is very filling, so if you can decide on a flavor you can save a few bucks if you split one. I was full after about half of my single scoop.

If you want to treat that someone special, or yourself, to a great evening, go to dinner at Wildflowers, Bluefin, or one of the other great restaurants in the Casas Adobes Plaza (www.casasadobesplaza.com), and then finish at Frost. It's a great night you wont forget. I sure haven't.

Frost is a gelato shop on the corner of Ina Road and Oracle Road, on the way to the Westin La Paloma. We happened upon this place quite by chance, looking for another store in this strip mall. What a treat!

The display cases are beautiful and the place is sparkling clean. After a few taste tests and a lot of pondering, we finally ordered. A medium size allows you to have 2 scoops and a large allows 3, so you can have several flavors. I chose a scoop of Almond and a scoop of Chocolate. Wow! Great combo! My friend chose Chocolate, Mint Chocolate Chip and the Italian version of Chocolate Chip. All were delicious, but we agreed the Chocolate was outstanding.

I definitely recommend stopping by, especially on a hot summer day. A great way to cool down!

Frost: A Gelato Shoppe

Growing up allergic to milk, I have never been accustomed to having a choice in ice-cream flavor when going out. If there is any sorbet I can eat, there are two flavors max to choose between. So was I surprised when I walked into Frost, Tucson's newest hip gelato shop (okay, Tucson’s only hip gelato shop) to find an entire case devoted to Italian sorbet. The thing about Italian sorbet is that the favors are so real! It’s almost like that scene from the original "Charlie and The Chocolate Factory" where they are talking about the lickable wall paper “and the snozberries taste like snozberries!”
For indeed the banana taste like banana, the green apple tastes like the freshest, crispest Granny Smith apples, and the mango tastes like an honest mango. In fact, the only sorbet I wouldn’t recommend would be the wine-flavored one; it was just a tad bit too pungent. Though I have never tasted the gelato, I have heard rave reviews about it.

And aside from the killer sorbet, Frost is a great place because it’s a Tucson kind of place. You are allowed to sample as many flavors as you wish, no matter how long the line is. The service is friendly. And of course, it was started by a couple of U of A grads. So if you’re ever in Tucson, stop by this place; it’s worth the trip!
