Blatnice

Blatnice

We were very happy to discover this gem of a restaurant by accident. The first time we went in we only had a bottle of wine and a plate of cheese (filling enough on their own), but it was so cozy and the staff were so nice that we went back the next night to have dinner. That night, the meal consisted of peach chicken (a specialty to Czech), boiled potatoes, and a fruity dessert. It cost about $10 per person.

I have since been back many times and the food and service have been consistently good. It’s a small restaurant that fills up quickly around dinnertime, but there has never been a long wait for the food to arrive. My favorite thing to order is the honey chicken while my mom liked the ham and eggs. My friend ordered the salmon and although it had some bones in it, it was good. Not too dry, but not too soggy either. Because it is on a side street it is not as expensive as some of the other restaurants in the area and Ii mostly heard Czech spoken which is a nice change from the English you hear in every other place.

The staff is fairly friendly and used to dealing with tourists, although they seem to have a lot of local people in as well so it must even itself out for them. They are courteous and the food always arrived in a timely manner.

Wonderful Eatery

My family went on a trip to Prague two years ago and wanted to taste the true local cuisine as well as see all the sights. We researched several travel sites and brought along several recommendations for places to eat. Blatnice was among them. On a sidestreet away from the crowds we found a modest basement eatery with an extensive menu of Czech fare. Everything we had on our first visit was wonderfully prepared and modestly priced. Unlike other Prague restaurants we visited near the tourist areas most of the people in the dining room were Czech, a good sign.

After eating in other recommended places and serendipidtous finds, we went back to Blatnice. Blatnice quickly became our favorite and our meals there are still among the most treasured memories of our trip. If you need modern organic or veggie food Blatnice is not for you. But if you seek to enjoy lovingly prepared Crech traditional dishes in an unpretentious atmosphere, Blatnice will not disappoint. It can get very crowded during peak so either choose off hours or be preared to wait a bit.

We got lost on our first night, and rather than keep looking, we just stopped where we were - the place to our left looked nice....and in we went. This turned out to be Blatnice.

We were all tired and worn out, and took a seat at a large wooden-benched table, ordered our first Czech beers (dark, and Pilsner), and hit the menu. It's a largish menu of mainly traditional Czech dishes. We had no idea what to expect, as it was relatively early in the evening, and few people were eating as yet. (It filled up as the evening progressed, though).

We decided to go for main courses and dessert - which it's as well we did - as the portion sizes turned out to be ENORMOUS! Hubby had a Czech platter (various types of meat, dumplings, etc.), eldest had Pork Schnitzel, youngest had baked chicken with ham and cheese, and I had a chicken ragout type of thing with steamed vegetables. All of which was washed down with more beer (dark and Gambrinus) with fruit juice and water for the kids. The portion sizes were twice what we'd normally have, but all seemed to get polished off anyway!

After all that we decided to share one dessert between the four of us - a crepe stuffed with chocolate ice cream, with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Huge too it was - but four ways made it reasonable, and the kids (and me *grin*) always have room for pudding!

Service was fairly efficient and came with a smile, even as the restaurant filled up. All in all - a success. The bill, including a small cover charge, came to 1020CZK - about £24 - which seemed pretty darned good for what we'd had.
