This is one of the older (or the oldest) restaurants in Playa. They have real flavor, great atmosphere, and excellent prices.
Here you feel at home, the waiters are attentive and make sure you are having a good time. The decoration is, of course, sea-themed but with some humor. Also, they blend the restaurant with the bar, with the excursions shop and the dive shop, it is funny to have it all in one.
The food is incredible, really fresh and the cooks know their job. I ordered the fish fillet yucatecan style (grilled on aluminum foil and bathed with achiote paste and served with steamed rice and veggies), and it was excellent, I also added an order of French fries to dip in the achiote sauce, it was so yummy.
This restaurant sits at the edge of the beach and you can choose between sitting under the main palapa, or at the beach with sand under your feet. The view is gorgeous, and you get the sea breeze to refresh you.
Being this good and cheap is very unusual, so don't let the opportunity pass, I did for many years and just recently gave it a try and now I feel bad for not coming to this treasure on the beach on my past visits. The place is very discrete and won't flash you while you stroll down the beach or on the street, and that is one of it's beauties, is a real place not trying hard to get your business with artificial advertising and marketing tricks, is just a honest restaurant.

You might think a beach restaurant has to be expensive, but that's not the case here. Look for the lunch special sign on the beach. Fish fillets are prepared in a variety of sauces, and you can get rice and corn tortillas for 45MXP. We were seated out on the beach, toes in the sand, but there are trees if you want shade. My local friend suggested the tixnic(sp?), a local Mayan specialty. It had a full flavor of light tomato sauce with peppers and onions. It was fantastic and something I never would have thought to order on my own. While we waited for our meals, we took a dip in the calm waters. I instantly dried in the intense sun back at the table. It was a peaceful, relaxing Mayan beach lunch.
This is still one of my favorites places for lunch or dinner. Everything is affordable, especially shots of Cazadores tequila for 35 pesos. Some places charge 75 pesos and they aren't even located on the beach! Service is prompt and attentive.

If you are in Playa del Carmen, you will find a Subway restaurant, a McDonald's, and all the kinds of fast food you can imagine, but if you want to have a great local dish, you have to go to La Tarraya. This little restaurant is located right on the beach and you can have all kinds of dishes, but you need to try the specialty, the seafood. You will enjoy your meals, looking at the sea, having a good time, and the best of all - the cheap price of the restaurant.
