San Sebastian: Bars and Tapas

At night the old town truly comes alive, and we ran from bar to bar feasting our eyes and stomachs on a wide array of tapas and Riojas. Cured meats hung above our heads as we sat and snacked on empanadas, pickled herring, spicy prawn rolls and sweet flan. One great spot is a small bar on the corner of Plaza de la Trinidad called Clery, where we received very generous pourings of Rioja and Crianza.

Most bars in the area have a very busy but intimate feel, which makes it fun to explore a few places in one evening. Nonsmokers be warned: All the bars we went to are very smoky and few, if any, have nonsmoking areas.

Tapas!

Definitely the best way to eat in San Sebastian is to hop around the tapas bars in the old town. You'll be eating on your feet, but you'll get to taste a wide variety of Basque tapas and great wine at reasonable prices. Just follow the crowds into one of the many tapas bars, ask for a pincho de vino or cerveza and start pointing to what you want to eat. Some places also have menus from which you can select hot made-to-order tapas. I found that most places offered the same or similar fare, so you may want to choose just by the number of people eating - the more crowded, the better the food, I always figure. Or, you can do what we did and ask someone to recommend their favorite - then good luck trying to find it!
