Speaking of Food

Typical Costa Rican food can be summed up in three words - 'rice and beans.' A typical breakfast is gallo pinto, which is rice and beans (I warned you!) cooked with some onions, garlic and whatever other vegatables the cook decides to throw in. It is usually served with eggs and tortillas. A casado is a typical lunch. It consists of rice and beans, some type of meat or fish, 'picadillo' (mixed chopped vegetables), salad, and frequently 'plátano,' or plaintain. Refrescos are fruit drinks made from native tropical fruits. Try guanabana, cas, mora, or papaya.

Random Restaurant on the Street

My husband and I went walking in San Jose and decided to eat in the first restaurant we saw that was busy. This was fun to do because the restaurant we chose obviously catered to locals rather than to tourists. Our waitress was a bright-eyed, middle-aged lady with very broken English. Thanks to a few Spanish words we had picked up from language classes and Taco Bell commercials, we managed to order a genuine, Costa Rican meal. We found it to be quite tasty, though high in starch, and the portions were huge. The tab was very cheap, and the service was quite snappy. I would suggest dropping into any unknown restaurant like this as part of your Costa Rican adventure!
