In our view, this is the best Mexican restaurant in the desert. It's a small family run business with great food. It's popular, so expect a wait, especially on the weekends. They do have a nice outdoor area in the front. The help is friendly and eager to please.
The margaritas are outstanding. One of their specials is the crab enchiladas -- they are not on the menu, so ask your server if they can make them that night. If they have them, you are in for a treat, so don't even open the menu! However, our son swears that they also have the best burritos on the planet!
The restaurant isn't much to look at. There are a few fountains scattered around, a few pieces of bad art, and the bar is small. However, it's all about the food here and it is THE BEST!
The wait staff is great and even with the crowds they seems focused and friendly. This place is very gay friendly and is a popular destination to hit prior to a night of bar hopping. The crowd is fun and lively. We never miss a night at El Mirasol when in the desert!
(There is also a resort in Palm Springs called El Mirasol; they are NOT connected. If you call or ask for directions, make sure you are getting the Mexican restaurant and not the resort.)
UPDATE 10/11/04
I went with a friend to El Mirasol, and he turned me onto a dish that is not on the menu, but can be ordered.
It's chicken enchildas with mole. The mole here is worth writing home about and over their enchiladas, it's too good for words. You won't find it on the menu, but it's a house favorite, just ask your server, they all know it. It's kind of the insiders' secret dish!
