Description: Back in December my friend and I were given some complimentary tickets to go and watch our football team play Blackpool from our supervisor at work. We had decided that we would make a bit of a day of it and that we would head out for something to eat after the game but we hadn’t really decided where we were going to go and so made a bit of a last minute decision on the way home to go to The Duckworth Arms which is near to Edenfield, Lancashire which is a place I had never been before and my friend hadn’t been for a long time either. This is my review of the establishment.
The Duckworth Arms can be found at:
416 Whalley Rd Ramsbottom, Bury BL0 0EG and you can contact them on 01706 823336
Where The Duckworth Arms is situated is actually a good location really as it is near to a bypass and so good for transport links if you are in a car but it is also set back a little from this and has lovely views of the countryside around it and so it is a nice place to visit. Whilst I have regularly passed this pub on my trips in to Bury where I sometimes shop I had never been there for a meal and so as my friend said it was nice when she had been we decided to give it a whirl!
The Duckworth Arms has a good sized car park which when we visited wasn’t very full and the restaurant was relatively busy inside and so I would say there are plenty of spaces for people to visit. Outside the main doors of the pub there is a menu which I think is a great idea as if you have fussy eaters with you you can check out the menu before you go inside. The pub does have a beer garden for summer months but it wasn’t something I was going to go looking for on a freezing December night!
When we went inside the pub it looked like a very traditional pub with low lighting, dark wood tables and it had a pretty homely feel to it which was nice. We were a little unsure about if we should go and choose a table or wait to be seated and so we stood at the till point for a few minutes until a man came along and showed us to a table. There were plenty of people eating in the pub but being a Saturday night at around 6pm I wasn’t really expecting it to be any different. We didn’t feel as though we were too cramped in our small table despite having people around us but we did hear grumblings of people who had been waiting quite a while for their food which was slightly off putting.
We were given menu’s to look at and I would say that for the most part the menu is what you would expect from your typical pub grub. Pies, curry, fish and chips and such like but there were a few more exotic sounding options on there as well. As it was a Saturday night there were no offers on the menu to speak of but I do believe they have a special menu from 12-6 every day where you can have a two course meal for just £8 when picking off a set menu which sounds like it would be excellent value.
I chose to have a traditional pub fare of cheese and onion pie and chips and beans whilst my friend chose to have a curry dish. We waited around fifteen to twenty minutes for our food but we both thought this was an acceptable amount of time to wait. When the food came I was pleased to see that it looked as though it was home made food and freshly prepared. The food was all steaming hot and I have to say it was really enjoyable food to eat and we felt as though we were getting good quality. Our main meal cost us around £8 each which I don’t think is too over the top but obviously if you went earlier in the day you may find the set menu a better deal for you.
Starters and desserts were available but there weren’t many of each really. We chose not to have either as we were full from our main meal anyway!
I would recommend a visit to The Duckworth Arms if you are a fan of a "proper" pubs. They offer a range of real ales as well as your standard spirits, soft drinks and such like and it is a nice place to go for a drink and a bite to eat in my opinion. We didn’t find that we felt rushed in the eating part of the restaurant and we noted that there were people there with families too which was nice to see. I enjoyed the homely feel to this establishment and would certainly go again as we got good value for our money really.
Thank you for reading my review!
