The Country Girl pub is set back from the main Raddlebarn Road in Selly Oak, just around the back of Selly Oak Hospital. My mum’s not in great health and is often in and out of this hospital, so this place really becomes a second home in these times with the added advantage of when my mum is feeling better I can get permission from the nurses to bring her here for a spot of lunch.
This is a reasonably large pub with plenty of seating, it has a wonderful homely look which is the trademark of Ember Inns and makes for a lovely place for either a spot of lunch or just a few drinks. There's lots of dark wood in evidence and while this would ordinarily make it a dull interior, lighting is cleverly done so that it feels like it's brightly candle-lit and very welcoming. Everything is always sparkling clean and tidy, during our visits I've always been impressed by how speedily staff clear up after diners - this never makes us feel rushed because they always wait until they're certain we've finished eating, but it's nice not to be talking over dirty dinner plates when our meals are done.
During our most recent visit we both ate sticky chicken wings which were served with BBQ sauce and a delicious fresh coleslaw. I was hugely impressed with this starter due to the fact that the chicken wings were incredibly meaty and cooked thoroughly so that there was white meat throughout (no pinkness) and a wonderfully sticky and flavoursome skin. It was obvious that the wings were cooked well because when I drew my fork across the meat it literally fell off the bone, and my partner commented that his were of the same fabulous quality. The coleslaw was obviously homemade and absolutely perfect; fresh, crunchy and extremely tasty - I could have eaten another portion but unfortunately it was not available as a side order!
For our main meals I had Scampi, Prawns and Chips which was a wonderfully filling meal, not greasy in the slightest with a real home made feeling to the food. There were an equal number of wholetail scampi and large king prawns, they were served in a light dusty batter which was absolutely perfect and a nice change from the thickly breaded scampi you usually get in pub restaurants. This was served with peas and a nice crisp salad plus I was offered a choice of tartare sauce or ketchup, I chose the tartare and it was the perfect compliment to the fishiness of the seafood - mind you I also nicked a sachet of ketchup for my chips too and this was as great as you’d expect!
My fella ate a delicious looking beef burger which was huge and served with chips and a small amount of salad. I could smell the meatiness of the burger as I was eating my meal and it was as much as I could do to not ask for a bite - as I knew he’d say no! He commented that it was beautifully cooked and there was no greasy overload on either the food or his plate when he'd finished eating, not that grease bothers him but I think it's a good indication of how well the food has been prepared and cooked if a naturally oily item such as a burger is relatively grease-free when it's served.
Neither of us wanted a dessert, but the couple next to us were eating a delicious looking chocolate tart when we arrived and it really did look great. I could smell the rich chocolate from our table and it definitely got my appetite up for my meal, in fact if I hadn't smelled this lovely dessert I probably wouldn’t have needed my starter!
We paid around £40 for our meal and a couple of drinks which is good value in my opinion due to the fact that the food is so delicious and of superb quality, I feel here you're paying slightly extra for a pleasant atmosphere and personally I'd rather eat here than any of the cheaper pub restaurants in Selly Oak.
Drinks in The Country Girl are well chosen to represent the local population, with a good selection of Cask Ales (which my fella loves) and real beers as well as the more standard lagers and bitters. I find prices for the drinks to be very reasonable and although they don’t tend to have special offer prices, as a whole the drinks are well priced. I am always impressed with how fresh the drinks are in here, the special 'cold’ lagers are always at the perfect temperature and wine is always well chilled. Glasses and cutlery are always spotlessly clean and I’ve never once had cause to complain about a dirty fork or lipstick on my glass.
The staff in here are great too; knowledgeable about the food they serve and keen to help in any way. Always well groomed and polite, they definitely get my vote when compared to the scruffy staff in nearby bars on the Selly Oak High Street.
