Oliver's serves made-to-order sandwiches, and there are quite a few types to choose from. When we first entered, I couldn’t tell if we were supposed to order first and then sit down, or what. This is one of the things that drives me so crazy about restaurants in this country, because usually when I do it wrong, they act like I’m an idiot. So I just asked this guy, and he was really friendly and explained that we did order and pay first, and then sit down. Of course this meant that I had to make a decision, like now. Argh.
I was slightly overwhelmed with all the choices — according to the menu, I first had to choose the filling and the ‘size’ of the sandwich. Large sandwiches were between £2.99 and £3.70, and the small ones about £1 less. Since I was really hungry, I decided I wanted the chargrilled chicken, and I said as much, but then the counter guy asked me what kind of bread I wanted. This is where the size issue came in, as there were small breads, like croissants and regular white or wheat, and large breads, like baguettes and this crazy gigantic white bread. I chose the crazy gigantic white bread (that’s not really what it was called — I think it was just ‘large white’). The counter assistant then asked me what kind of spread I wanted, and I chose the low fat spread as opposed to mayonnaise or butter. He then started putting the sandwich together and asked me if I wanted all the veggies, and I just said yes so as not to cause trouble. He gave me the plate with the fully constructed sandwich on it, the already-massive bread bulging at the seams (does a sandwich actually have seams?? not sure…). He then asked me if I wanted anything else, and I collected an empire biscuit on the way toward the register, and asked for a diet coke. In total, it was £5.50. The sandwich was £3.70, the empire biscuit 80 pence and the soda £1.
The sandwich was really good, and — not too surprisingly — very filling. All the veggies were fresh and the chicken was tasty, soft and not dry at all. And of course the bread was big, but soft too.
My friend had had more time to decide, and she had managed to find a special that I missed — a pre-prepared roll (she missed all the excitement, though) and a coffee for £3.28. I hadn’t seen them initially, but there were many prepared rolls, available for takeaway or dining in, and they were cheaper than the made-to-order ones.
Overall, we both enjoyed our sandwiches. The place was clean and the staff all were friendly, so I’d definitely go back. Especially now that I would know better how to order…
