The food is very basic. The people of this area are subsistence farmers. They grow mainly maize for tortillas and beans. Also at different times of the year they may also have fruit and basic vegetables. Meat is produced from their few chickens and turkeys, also they have eggs. All the food is cooked and a small wood fire. Most times the food is very basic it is really just a matter of what the family has. With most meals you will be given coffee. Very sweet coffee, they love sugar. If you aren’t a sweet tooth be sure to get this across. The food isn’t fantasticand at times it isn’t even that good, but hunger, exercise and the fresh mountain air make you very appreciative of the meals. That is for sure.
