This is a popular place for Greek food, especially for ready made suppers that Amsterdamers pick up and take home.
The restaurant has certainly seen better days, in fact it's old, dreary and very small. There are only a few tables crowded along the wall but most people get their food to go (and the take away price is a bit cheaper anyway). The food is displayed in a glass case and you point to what you want - much like you do in many tavernas in Greece.
The menu consists of typical Greek fare like pastitso (Greek macaroni and cheese), lamb, souvlaki, spanokopita (spinach pie), yemista (stuffed peppers), tzatziki (cucumber and yogurt dip) and humus (chick pea dip). There were Greek desserts too, including baklava (phyllo pastry with walnuts and honey).
Each item was sold individually and side dishes or salads were ordered separately.
I chose yemista, a large green pepper that was stuffed with rice, tomato sauce and beef. Also, a side dish of onions, celery and broad beans in an oil & vinegar dressing. The meal cost approx. $6.00 and came with plastic cutlery.
Although it was by no means a fancy meal, I found a bench alongside the Singel canal, near the Flower Market and enjoyed a filling and delicious meal while taking in the sights and sounds of Amsterdam.
The restaurant is only open for supper and although it may not be much to look at, it's quite popular and the food is good.
