Description: So, you've decided to take an extended trip in the ilderness...biking, hiking, or canoeing. What are you going to eat?
If you're going away for more than a weekend, refrigeration is usually not possible. Depending on where you're headed, water could also be a problem. You will also need to bring cooking utensils, including a portable stove (which will light even in the rain, unlike wood.)
Here are some suggestions for nutritious food that is portable and unlikely to spoil:
Bread
&
Cereals
- crackers
-
flatbreads (tortillas or pitas)
-
dry pasta
-
noodles
-
quick rice
-
instant oatmeal
-
granola-type cereal (we added a handful to the oatmeal)
-
ramen noodle soups
Fruits
&
Vegetables
-
dried fruits
-
dehydrated vegetables (cook, then dehydrate
in oven or dehydrator ahead of time)
-
banana chips
Dairy
Products
-
powdered milk
-
old cheese such as cheddar
-
grated parmesan cheese
Meats
&
Alternatives
-
beef jerky
-
non-refrigerated summer sausage (we found it
at a Mennonite market)
-
dehydrated chili, meat sauce for pasta, etc.
(make ahead & dehydrate)
-
pre-cooked bacon strips
-
sunflower seeds
Miscellaneous
-
juice crystals, assorted flavours
-
flour (thickening sauces)
-
salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder,
chili powder
-
boullion cubes (a warm, nutritious drink, or
add to the pot when you're cooking for a flavour boost)
-
instant coffee, tea bags, sugar, coffee creamer
-
hot chocolate
In addition to food, you'll
need the following:
-
pot set (small, medium &
large pots, with lids)
-
single-burner camp stove
-
fuel
-
spoons, spatula & other utensils
for cooking
-
water filter
-
water bottle or canteen
Remember, it's always better
to carry extra food than to go hungry...if you're hiking, biking, or canoeing
you're probably using more energy than you normally would sitting at your
desk all day, so plan on eating more than you usually would. If you
don't normally eat breakfast, break the habit, at least while on the trail.
I'm usually a juice & toast girl, but I was eating two envelopes of
instant oatmeal with granola added every morning, and hungry again by noon.
Whatever you bring, and wherever
you go, remember to have fun!
