There Are Other Burgers Out There

Shake Shack is fairly legendary in New York, and I think mostly because they reintroduced a type of burger that many people forgot they loved. That said, I'm not exactly sure how to describe this burger, except to say it's much like a fast-foot burger, but actually good. Which is to say it includes a classic hamburger bun, american cheese, lettuce and tomato, and a fairly thin patty rather than the french bread or english muffins, exotic cheeses, and balls of ground beef that many restaurants serve as "gourmet" burgers these days.

Anyway, because it's so popular, there's usually quite a long line. Fear not, you can skip the line and get something just as good and classic at the following places: Burger Joint in the the Parker Meridien hotel, Soho Park in Soho, and Black Iron Burger Shop in the East Village. Or, if you feel like a chain, Five Guys Burgers & Fries have multiple locations throughout the city as well.

Burger Good - Line Sucks

The burgers are delicious and simple here. The are a ton better than burgers you get at a fast food place...even though this is pretty much a fast food place in a pleasant park surroundings. The shakes are also excellent, but you must get a "concrete" treat...which is a frozen custard concoction.

Shake Shack

I work in the Chelsea area of Manhattan and have never been to the famed Shake Shack. So I figured that today was as good as any day and made my way down to 23rd Street and 5th Avenue to the beautiful Madison Park where the Shake Shack is. When I got there, there was a line that was at least 50-people deep, only adding to the craze that is buzzing around about this place. After an astronomical 50-minute wait, I reached the front of the line. I had plenty of time to think about what I wanted and by the time I reached the window, my mouth was watering with the knowledge that soon I would be filling it with a Shake Shack Burger and a black & white shake. The burgers were decently priced at around $5 with the shake at a whopping $6. Although the shake was amazing, awakening taste buds that had been dormant since I arrived here on this Earth, the price was a bit much. However, overall, the Shake Shack is one of those places that is a must-visit for any New Yorker and a great place for a tourist looking for that authentic New York meal and not he Times Square stuff.

Shake Shack

I came here with a small group of VTers on the start of my VT/Best Burger tour of NYC. I ordered up the Shack Stack, which holds 3 patties between the bun with some lettuce and tomato mixed in. What a great mix of foods. This really hit the spot. It is quite large for a single burger and you have to really be hungry to eat it. So that said it will be rare I get this same burger next time. But I really liked it. We had great company in Yon, Vin, Martin, and Jude along with me all the while enjoying a wonderful view sitting outside in the middle of Madison Square Park.

Per the official website "A portion of your purchase will benefit the Madison Square Park Conservancy." I did not know this until I was writing my tip. You can go and read more about it on www.madisonsquarepark.org.

Hours fluctuate through out the year. As of now they are open from 11am to 9pm daily.

I coupled the Shack Stack with an order of cheese fries. Throw in a coke and it was a fun and sloppy (that’s a good thing) meal for only $12.50. And yes, I did order the most expensive and largest burger this time. Next I will try another.

I will definitely come back to this place for their burger.

Shake Shack

Located at the southeast corner of Madison Square Park, Shake Shack is an outdoor eating experience not to be missed!

Not only are the burgers tasty and affordable by New York standards, the ambience of the place provokes nostalgic emotions.

Already towards the end of November, the weather in NYC is ideally fall. Nine of us at the office decided to take advantage of the 70s temperatures and take a trip to enjoy a fall lunch in the park one last time. At 2pm, the line was still long, but only because one of their cash machines malfunctioned. Still, Shake Shack was able to appease us by serving various flavors of their custard to those who waited patiently.

This outting ended up varying from our typically lunch breaks. Instead, I felt like we were having a leisurely sunday brunch with friends, watching the colored leaves fall around us.

Spring, summer, or fall, Shake Shack is an eating experience like no other and should not be missed.
