My husband and I, who think an antique is that moldy thing in the refrigerator, went to Antique City because of our curiosity. Roberts Treats and Treasures will lure us to return. We had stopped into this brick 1900-era building at 230 Antique City Dr., known to the locals as Roberts Bakery, to get a cup of coffee before our drive back to Omaha. The scent of fresh-baked breads and sweet rolls quickly destroyed my will to diet. The tray of pecan rolls sitting on the counter tempted us to toss our hopes for an early return home.
It is a long, narrow building. Treats are at the front. Treasures, mostly antiques, are toward the back. Larry Roberts bakes while his wife, Betty, who does the frostings and the fillings, works the counter. Together, they produce a variety of breads, dinner rolls, sweet rolls, and pies.
We ordered the pecan rolls and coffee. I have never tasted a roll better than what I ate that day. The flavors--cinnamon, brown sugar, pecans, and bread--were taken to their maximum without overpowering. The bread was moist and tender, the pecans plentiful.
While we ate, people constantly came and bought treats to take with them. We, too, bought carry-out: a peach pie. When we ate it (that evening, I hate to admit), we wished we had bought more. The plump peaches filled the pie shell--a thin, crisp, sweet delight--with flavor.
The store opened in February 2004. I hope it will be around for many years.
