Since I love seafood, and I had heard so many people recommend the Monterey Fish House, I decided I had to try it out. During the summer, the Fish House is absolutely packed in the evenings. Since the restaurant is small and doesn't have much parking, I didn't relish the idea of hassling over a parking spot and waiting forever for a table. So, I decided to go for lunch. I arrived when the doors opened for lunch at 11:30am. This is a great time to come if you want to try out the restaurant, since it stayed relatively quiet the whole time I was there.
I have to say, I did not like my meal. I wanted prawns, and they didn't have any non-fried prawns on their lunch menu. However, the server said that they could give me the grilled prawns from the evening menu. It sounded good to me. I was so disappointed when they brought out prawns just swimming in butter. I know, people like their grilled food dripping in butter. I thought it might have a bit of butter, but this was awful. I didn't feel that I had the right to ask them to redo it, so I ate them. Yes, they were VERY fresh, but the taste of so much butter made me a little sick. The sides that came with the meal were not very good, overcooked pasta and overcooked veggies.
One thing I can recommend about Monterey Fish House - they have a fabulous wine list, all served by the glass. I did have a delightful, reasonably priced glass of wine, certainly the best thing about my visit. Because I had some extra time, I decided to see if the restaurant could redeem itself via dessert. Unfortunately, no. I had chocolate cake, and it tasted as though it had come out of an Entenmann's box.
Overall, this was one of my most expensive meals in Monterey and one of my least favorite. This doesn't mean others won't like it, just that my experience wasn't very good.
