The Blue Ball

From Oakham, take the road to Braunston (2 miles) and turn down at The Plough. A drive down a narrow street will bring you to one of the area’s treasures. It is a long wattle and daub construction with thatched roof built in the 17th century. As to why it’s called The Blue Ball, there are theories, but no one’s sure.

The menu included duck, breast of chicken, pork fillet, salmon fillet, field mushrooms/spinach and ricotta tortellini, and prime Scottish steak. The starters range from smoked salmon to prawns to melon to mushrooms served with a Stilton sauce. There were also specials including liver and sausages on the chalkboard by the bar, but we chose to go with the menu. In general, prices range from £10 to £15.

And then there is the ambience. The building is wonderful. There is a pub atmosphere in the front and back rooms, but the dining room in the middle features low, beamed ceilings, brick and stone, nice lighting and decoration, and dark-wood tables. The tables are without cloths, using mats instead, but there is enough cutlery for a small feast.

We chose to start with a shared chicken liver parfait with balsamic grape chutney. My wife chose the pork fillet in brandy and peppercorn sauce with caramelized apples, and I chose the Gressingham duck breast with raspberry and red wine sauce. They came in large portions and were absolutely superb. The side dish of vegetables – carrots, Swiss chard, broccoli, and snow peas (served separately) was done to perfection.

A sweet tray was offered, but we simply chose coffee. The wine list includes five reds and five whites as house wines, priced in the £10 to £12 range. There is also an extended list of wines beginning at about £15. We chose a Mondaaro Cabernet Sauvignon from the house selection that was a perfect accompaniment.

It was an excellent experience: excellent food, wonderful ambience, and a young but attentive staff. Our meal came in at £52, plus tip. I thought it quite reasonable considering the quality. I suggest reserving, particularly if you choose to go on Monday night, which is curry night and very popular.
