Originality Served

After a visit to the Queen Mary, we went straight to Long Beach Harbour. As we walked through the marina, we were recommended by an Argentine lady to eat at Yard House. And let me tell you... Yard House is the real thing!

As you enter, you can smell the efficiency and sympathy all over the place. Good taste in decoration can be noticed everywhere and smiles appear in every face.

While I was looking at the menu I knew there was something special about this restaurant. A selection of original dishes can be found in every line.

At Yard House, "Originality" is the entreé, "fine cuisine" is the main course, and "joy" is the dessert. Take this three-course meal and enjoy the most wonderful view of Long Beach.

Yard House Restaurant

We were at Shoreline Village in Long Beach on a weekday after work. Shoreline Village is a shopping/entertainment center on the Long Beach harbor off of Shoreline and Ocean Blvd. I was with three other friends to celebrate one of our friend's birthday at the Yard House.

There is dining outside with a harbor view at the Yard House, but we opted for inside as it started getting chilly these days. We were there for Happy Hour and were seated promptly. Since the bulk of the crowds hadn't arrived yet, service was prompt and attentive. The Yard House's decor is mainly nice rich dark woods. There's a large bar stationed in the middle of the restaurant with literally over a hundred brews on tap. Their signature drink is a yard long beer glass shaped like a beaker.

After we got our drinks, we put in our orders. A good number of appetizers are half off during Happy Hour weekdays from 3 to 6pm. We took advantage of that and ordered half off lettuce wraps, onion ring tower, pepperoni and mushroom pizza, and fried calamari. My friends ordered two Chicken Enchilada Stacks for their entrées.

Our appetizers arrived a few minutes later. The lettuce wraps are stir fried chicken and smoked tofu, pine nuts and green onions with three dipping sauces. You spoon the chicken mixture and dipping sauce onto a piece of crisp lettuce, curl up the lettuce and eat it similar to a taco. It was quite good.

The sausage and mushroom pizza appetizer was actually my entrée. In my opinion, a crust can make or break a pizza, and this crust was quite nicely textured and good.

The onion ring tower was the biggest surprise. It's a bunch of beer battered onion rings dusted with Parmesan cheese, served with chipotle and ranch dipping sauces. The cheese added a nice new dimension in taste I hadn't experienced before.

The fried calamari was good, too. There wasn't anything special or unusual about it, but it's nice to have something taste as expected.

My two friends love the Chicken Enchilada Stack, it's chicken and roasted pasilla peppers in garlic cream layered with jack cheese, fresh corn tortillas, pinto beans, tomatillo and red chile sauce. They order that EVERY time we dine at the Yard House.

For dessert, we shared the Kona Coffee Ice Cream Sundae. It's made of java chip ice cream topped with Oreo cookie crumbles, macadamia nuts and chocolate sauce. We should have ordered a second one since there was hardly any left by the time it got around to me.

Our total bill for this dine was $87 including tax. The half priced Happy Hour appetizers really helped out our bill and gave us an opportunity to try different things and...well...pig out.

We very highly recommend the Yard House Restaurant. The food, service, and ambience is consistently good at every visit, even at different locations.

The Yard House

At The Yard House, I was surprised at the interesting selections in the menu, such as the wasabi mashed potatoes. I had a sushi-like appetizer and enjoyed looking at everyone else's meals. Because we had no reservations, we sat outside and waited. The restaurant is right on the water, and we actually got down onto the docks and explored a bit. All in all, an interesting adventure.

The Yard House

Well, the Yard House was an experience. The wait we had was about two hours! But at least while we waited, we could drink from their wide selection of alcoholic beverages - from beer to cocktails!

The dinners were huge, but delicious... and even after the wait, I couldn't eat my meal! We all enjoyed ourselves, and our dinner!

I recommend the Yard House, despite the long wait that you might have. If you're planning on going, turn up early!

(But we did notice the distinct lack of decent Australian beer - they only had Fosters. That's stuff we don't want. That's why we export it! I'm no beer drinker, but even I know that!!)
