Rijstafel is a popular meal at many Indonesian restaurants in Amsterdam. It consists of up to 30 dishes - from spicy curries to plain white rice and everything in between and is served buffet style at the table. Unfortunately for me, rijstafel is only available to groups of 2 or more and I was too shy to ask a complete stranger to share a meal.
Luckily, Sukabumi had a sort of mini rijstafel for one, called Nasi Rames. It started with a small dish of raw vegetables, marinated in rice vinegar. This was followed by a large plate containing small portions of a number of dishes - chicken satay, beef cubes in coconut sauce, pork with soy bean, sliced hard boiled egg with a curry sauce, prawn cracker (similar to those in Britain) and two vegetable combos, one with curry and the other with a spicy chili sauce. Accompanying this was a dish of plain white rice, a perfect contrast to all the spicy flavors.
The restaurant is not a fancy place. It's rather dark and there are only about 6 tables which were continually occupied. As well as rijstafel, the menu has a la carte Indonesian dishes and they also do take out orders.
Like many restaurants in Amsterdam, water does not come with the meal. A request for water means they'll likely bring bottled water at an additional charge. With the combination of flavors in rijstafel, I'd recommend beer or pop since you're paying for a beverage anyway.
The restaurant is located just a few blocks from the floating flower market on Singel and is open from noon until 11:00 p.m., daily.
I didn't have a reservation but was there for an early supper so managed to get a table. I'd recommend a reservation, just in case, since the restaurant is so small.
