Cafe in the Crypt , Trafalgar Square

It's a great place for anything from a sandwich to a full meal, with the menu changing daily, cafeteria style. The apple dumpling with custard sauce was terrific as were the bacon sandwiches. It is very strange to walk over, or sit and dine on "final resting places". The room is vaulted, with low lighting creating an atmosphere very different from anything I have ever experienced. St. Martin in the Fields is the home parish of the Queen Mother. Classical Concerts take place around 1 p.m. on certain days of the week and some evenings around 7 p.m. in the church. A donation is gladly accepted to help London's homeless. The church also has a brass rubbing center and has one of the best souvenier shops in the city. We had lunch at St. Martin's and attended an afternoon concert in the early part of our stay in London. Upon returning from our travels outside of the city, we decided our last meal in London would be dinner in the crypt.

This is cafeteria style. The food is wonderful. They have soup, sandwiches, quiche; desserts are good, also. They have a selection of beers and wines.

There is also a brass rubbing center in the basement along with a small gift shop. They have a market outside, but it''s not as good as other markets.

(Brass rubbing for those who don''t know -- they have a selection of "pictures" with the picture raised, for example a saint or boat or church. Then you take a piece of heavy construction paper and wax/metallic crayon and you rub the pictures and transfer it to the paper and take that home as a souvenir.
