This place is great, super old world - it has been around forever and you can rest assured that whatever you order will be delicious. We were originally drawn in by the roasting chickens on the exterior corner of the building. It's always packed by locals and tourists alike. The bartenders are great and so is the wait staff - the place has great character and makes for a very festive dining experience. It was the first time I ate snails... clearly at the urging of the establishment's name and they weren't too bad, but I think my heart belongs to the chicken and the cochinillo. This restaurant is in the far corner of Plaza Real... PLEASE be careful in the dark alley way though as it is the site of many a pick pocket. And if you're feeling a little party afterward, there is a very tiny bar a few doors down. It's a bi-level and you can barely move, but the music rocks and the drinks are cheap... for the life of me, I cannot remember the name but it starts with an M and may actually be "Macarena."

A very special establishment is Los Caracoles which was founded in 1857. It is a typical spot with an outdoor grill. The counter in its entrance is the perfect place to have a drink while waiting for a table. Its dining rooms, covered with lots of photographs of famous international people who've been there, and private halls inside, together with its exquisite attention to diners, make this a good choice for any visitor who wishes to enjoy Catalan cooking in a unique setting!

'Los Caracoles' is recommended in most major travel guidebooks. That's probably why I avoided it for years. On a friend's recommendation, I put my prejudices aside and found one of Barcelona's best.
I almost had to duck to get into the hallway at the back of the cramped bar that doubles as entrance to the dining area. We walked past the open grill area and the aging kegs of wine to our table.
We ordered roast suckling pig and (just in case) roast chicken. The suckling pig was amazing, although it's not the type of dish you can eat very often -- it's quite greasy. But don't miss it! And for the timid, the roast chicken was the best I've ever had.
As a curiosity, the walls are covered with photos of celebrities, politicans, and other personalities who have dined there. Rumor has it there's a picture of John Wayne somewhere there. I didn't have a week to look at them all, so I'll take the rumor at face value.
