This tiny place (with sidewalk tables and some inside seating) was a lifesaver for me. I am allergic to shellfish which made eating in Barcelona very difficult. Shellfish is the major subject of nearly every menu offering. I tried figuring out the menus in Tapas places, but even with the help of a friend who spoke fantastic Spanish, I couldn't find much to eat.
I was rescued by 'Fresh and Ready Sandwich' (that is really the name! Although 'Fresh Sandwich' is on the large sign above the door.) Fresh sandwiches, labeled as to contents in Catalunian (you can make sense of it if you know some Spanish or French) and some English. Words like 'salmon', 'jamon' (ham) stand out. You pick up the sandwiches you want, salads, sodas (Coke Light is similar to Diet Coke), fresh squeezed orange juice, fantastic joghurts, pastries, bottles of water...and pay. You are asked if you want the food 'aqui' (here). If not they bag it for take away. Watch out for 'arroz con leche' (rice pudding) in little pottery crocks. The pudding is good and you get to keep a nice crock as a souvenir!
This place is open long hours, late into the night. It's location, next to a McDonald's of all things, makes it easy to find. Once you are outside, seated at a table near the street (fantastic experience), when you look directly across the street, you will see the smaller of the two Gaudi apartment buildings--Casa Battlo. Meal with a view!
When weary on arrival after very long, crowded flights, I wanted something to eat, but didn't want to wait until late (by my standards) into the night. This little restaurant pleased me. Higher quality than, say, a Subway sandwich shop. I also bought items to take back to my hotel room/mini bar.
Paying for my food was my first experience with the Euro. I just handed over a 20 and took my change. The Euro coins are somewhat difficult to tell apart. Keep this place in mind for visits to Barcelona. It not only offers tasty food but will help you keep your budget in tact. Prices were in the range of what I would pay in Texas. No, I did not eat at the McDonalds!
