Lousy Service and Horrible Food

I just got back from this highly recommended place and can not complain enough. I am a vegetarian and try to eat healthy. I understand my choices are limited especially in Spain, but this place was simply horrible even to my friends who had non-veg food there.

Lets start with the service. They guy dripped water over my head and red wine not only over the table, but also on the menu I was reading. He dropped red wine over one of my friends' shirt. These guys are so busy, they whisk away immediately, not even aware of the stuff they do. Its as if they are in hurry to turn over customers. Not really sure if I can say that because me and my friends all came in two groups. The group that came later finished their dinner even before ours in the first group arrived. Not really sure why it took so long for them to get the food. Later when I was talking to my friend sitting next to me, this waiter barged in dumped the food on the table and left. Then he served my dish to my other friend. When I wanted to move the dish towards me, he grabbed my hand and moved the plate himself. However it was too late, I had already touched a plate that was too hot. Not that it burned me badly, but this guy, did not seem sorry or offered any help. He simply whisked away.

Enough about the service... lets talk about the food. They charged over 10 euros for a dish that had four slices of cheese, a little olive oil and pieces of bread. Not really sure why such a simple appetizer should cost so much. My veggie dish, spinach pasta was tasteless and full of cheese. Initially,, when I was going through the menu, I realized that I only have two veggie choices, both of them loaded with cheese. A lot of my other non-veggie eating friends also complained about their food... although I can not really describe how they felt.

I am sorry to say this... but after paying over 30 euros for such a shitty dish, I had to go to McDonald's and satisfy my hunger with McFlurry. In the US, I would go to McDonald's as a last resort... however, I guess I can now appreciate some positive things about McDonald's.

If you are going to this place in a big group... lets say 6+, DO NOT GO. If you are vegetarian and want to eat healthy, avoid this place.

4Gats, as any Samantha Brown-watching Travel Channel Fan can tell you, is the restaurant where Picasso used to hang out.

The dining experience was great! For my appetizer, I had a seafood masterpiece (mussels, oyster, etc.) with pasta. My main course was salmon with cottage cheese. It may sound funny, but I found it to be a tasty treat for my taste buds. Finally, I ended the evening with dessert, which wasn't that memorable.

The server was very attentive. I found the sommelier to be insensitive to what the dining guests would like.

Overall, it is a dining experience I will treasure fondly. The surroundings have so much history that you can't help but be taken in by them.

4Gats is a pretty cool place for the history alone - supposedly Picasso had his first exhibition here. The atmosphere belies the bistro's early 20th century heritage - the main dining area is set up almost like a dinner theater, with a large open area and a second-floor balcony around three sides of the room (make sure you duck up there - the ceilings are quite low). There were a violin and piano player the night we were there - unfortunately (for me), they were playing American standards like the "Titanic" theme (which gives me chills). The atmosphere is fun and active, though - it's obviously a popular place - and it's a good night out.

The food was good if not great - we liked the mussels and calamari very much, and the grilled vegetables were good as well. We had the house wine with dinner, which was fair enough. The service was attentive, although Lonely Planet calls the service "dismissive." I'd recommend it for the history and the calamari alone, though there are better options for dinner in town...
