La Salsa Cantina

First and foremost, in the style of Simpson's Comic-book Guy: Worst service ever. We were seated promptly, but then ignored for the rest of the evening by our server. He came to our table three times: to take our entire order after waiting 20 minutes, to drop off our food and appetizers at the same time about 20 minutes later, and then to drop off the bill half way through eating, in the style of 'get out.'

We had stopped at this restaurant on a whim. We were wandering the Miracle Mile Shops and were hungry. We had stopped to look at the menu and overheard another person say that they had eaten here before and really enjoyed it. In person recommendation: can't go wrong right?!

The food was awesome! I had the Chipotle Shrimp Salad and my boyfriend had Chicken Burritos with Mexican Rice. Both of us agreed that the lousy service was overshadowing what could be a great restaurant. The meal is also served with complimentary salsa and tortilla chips, which would have been nice as an appetizer while waiting for our food, but was brought with the meal instead.

All in all, if you don't care about service and are looking for good Mexican Cuisine, La Salsa Catina is the restaurant for you. If you are looking for service, skip La Salsa Cantina and find another place to eat.

This place has great food for a great price. Drinks are very good and not as pricey as the casino's "specialty" drinks. There are two locations, one is located on the street down from MGM Grand and the other is located inside the Aladdin/Planet Hollywood Dessert Passages Mall. Not only is it great for a evening casual dinner with cocktails, BUT it has the cheapest breakfast going. I went to the one in the Dessert Passage Mall since we were staying at the Aladdin, and I grabbed a $4 breakfast burrito, which was HUGE, while the others got a $4 coffee. They had great deals at breakfast and dinner.

LaSalsa Cantina - Take Two

In our previous visit to La Salsa Cantina, we had been disappointed by a lackluster dining experience. On this year's Vegas trip, we gave La Salsa Cantina ("Try our margarita yards!") another shot, and I'm happy to report that it was a far better experience this time around. There are several Cantina locations in Vegas (Forum Shops, Fremont Street Experience, Desert Passage, Luxor Hotel), easily identifiable by the large pink signature "Margarita by the Yard," on the sign, but we again went to the Showcase Mall (3785 Las Vegas Boulevard South - home of the M&M store) location for a Tuesday evening dinner. La Salsa Cantina is an affiliate of the La Salsa Fresh Mexican Grill chain.

The hostess was much nicer this time around, we were seated promptly, and we had an absolutely wonderful waitress. We also met the manager, Marco, who told us about La Salsa's specialty: the Cantina has more than 50 varities of tequilla. And we're not just talking Jose Cuervo, we are talking good tequillas - I'm not fond of them myself, but during the course of our dinner, my companions tried some out and gave praises.

The food was good. Our waitress recommended the new Queso Publano dip, which is melted cheese with Poblano peppers, tomato, onions, spices, and jalepenos. It was sooooo good. For my entree, I went for a favorite: chicken and shrimp fajitas. Fajitas are a relatively straightforward staple of Mexican restaurants, but my usual problem with fajitas--running out of tortilla wraps or toppings--was not an issue here. (This is always a plus, in my eyes). Service was prompt, drinks were kept full, and service was MUCH improved over the last visit. It should be noted too that La Salsa believes in fresh ingredients and no preservatives, so it makes for a flavorful dining experience.

Our waitress also told us about their weekend evening festitivities and invited us to return for them. She explained that they had live entertainment on Thursday, Fridays and Saturdays and that it was always a lot of fun. (Unfortunately our schedules did not allow us to return this visit, but we'll try to catch it when we're back in June).

One of the best recommendations our waitress gave us, and which left us with with a perfect end to the meal, was their new fried cheesecake dessert. This sinful creation is a slice of cheesecake, rolled in a tortilla and deep fried, then coated in a sugar and cinnamon mix, and served with a berry topping. Absolutely tasty, and so deliciously decadent you won't want to share!

So, I am pleased to report that a year after our previous visit, our next visit to the La Salsa Cantina was a much different--and far better!--experience than the first, and that I would now return here again. Muchas gracias en una super experiencia!

LaSalsa Cantina Mexican Fare

Please read my UPDATED (3/05) review of La Salsa, a year later for a better experience! :)

-- This review written 2/04

It had been a long day doing Vegas and we wanted dinner. Surprisingly, many places even past 9pm had a sizeable wait list on a Sunday night, so we thought we'd try La Salsa Cantina Mexican Fare, which is across the street from the NYNY Casino and next door to the MGM Grand in a kind of mini-mall set of shops. The decor was interesting in that a stream of single shoes had been nailed into the wall and ceiling above an odd explosion of a piece of art that brought to mind the Peter Gabriel video "Big Time". Otherwise, the restaurant is typical "faux Mexicana": wood booths, chairs all painted different colors, white plastered walls, etc.

We were seated immediately by a very unenthusiastic hostess and had to wait a while before our waiter showed up. (The busboy, however, was very prompt about bringing us water, chips and salsa). There was a pretty good selection of foods on the menu and the prices were fairly reasonable, especially for Vegas. We had to wait nearly 30 minutes for a pair of burritos and a mixed appetizer plate - pretty bad for a place where there were only about a dozen customers. We also had to ask three times before we got our specialty drinks from the bar.

I waitressed for several years, so when a waitress acts like she's doing you a favor by coming over to the table, it gets my goat. Luckily for our waitress that night, we were in a relatively good mood coming into the restaurant, and we were good company together, so we brushed off her behavior.

The food was standard Mexican; nothing remarkable, but fairly sizeable portions for the money, which was the restaurant's one saving grace.

I would not readily recommend LaSalsa to anybody looking for a great dining experience, unless your concern is bang for your buck. Even then, I would probably recommend looking around for a cheap buffet or even going to the neighboring McDonald's!
