I had an early dinner at Sea Island Shrimp House on Friday night. It was relatively crowded, even before 5pm. You place your order at the counter and are given a pager that will go off when it's ready. They also announce order numbers for people who aren't paying attention to the pager. You select your own table from the large dining room. There are lots of large tables, so you can easily go there with a family or group.
There is a range of seafood choices on the menu. You can pick from different types of shrimp or fish (fried or broiled). I ordered the Cajun fish nuggets. The fish was cooked perfectly and lightly breaded. However, there wasn't much Cajun flavor to speak of. Luckily, there is a range of sauce to choose from - tartar, a red sauce, hot sauce, vinegar, etc. There were so many fish nuggests that I could not finish. And the price was right, at only $5.99 for the platter.
Other platters are about $8. Other menu selections include oysters on the half-shell and steak. The colossal shrimp really are large - at least two large bites for each one. The choices of side dishes (most platters come with two) included green bean salad, french fries, onion rings (they're great!), coleslaw, spinach, and rice pilaf. Platters also come with two hush puppies. The portion sizes are generous, so you won't leave hungry. They were running a special to add seven grilled shrimp to any platter for about $2.99. You can check out the full menu at http://www.shrimphouse.com/menu.pdf.
There is a drink station, so you can get free refills on soda and iced tea (sweet or unsweet).
The atmosphere is extremely casual, with old wooden tables and light fixtures from the '60s. It feels like a local staple restaurant that has preserved its authentic style. It's worth checking out for a relaxed dinner.
