This cellar restaurant is located just a few minutes from the church. {Cross the road on the left on the second corner.} It's easy to miss because the sign is on the side street. The interior is quite cozy, glowing with rich red brickwork, crisp butter-colored tablecloths, and a flickering candle. Chopin’s Mazurka’s was the background music, but it was not overwhelming.
In the first dining room, a large group was already seated, so we opted for the smaller second room, which was empty. Within ten minutes of our arrival, all tables were full, mainly with local families and businessmen.
We sometimes find vegetarian dining options limited, especially in small towns, but we can make a meal of fresh bread, cheese, and perhaps a bowl of soup. We have found in Poland that the soup is often a meal in itself. The general menu in this restaurant is varied, with a good selection of local dishes: pork, beef, fish, etc.
We were limited to vegetable pierogies, dumplings, or pasta, so we started with a wonderful, fresh, crunchy salad topped with the sweetest tomatoes I have ever tasted. Accompanying the salad was a savory onion soup; the soup was hot and topped with puffy melt-in-your-mouth croutons and cream. Our potato-mushroom dumplings were buttery and filling. I ate only two; they really were very rich, and we should have shared. The owner was quite upset that I left so much, and it was hard to explain why, but fortunately, one of the young businessmen interpreted for me, thus smiles were restored. The bread was indeed fresh, and Neil used his to eat every scrap of his mushroom sauce. We opted for ice cream for dessert, and it was just right after the heavy meal.
I noted the dishes of our fellow diners; the meat portions were more than generous, nicely served by friendly staff. We enjoyed the Polish atmosphere in this friendly place and it was good value. Our bill, not including tip, was 50 zlty.
Wadowice itself did not appear to have an abundance of restaurants, but we did not visit the whole town, just the old section around the church. After seeing the church and museums, we had lunch and returned to Krakow.
